The 5th and 6th grade have been using dry erase boards around the room to work vertically on math problems.
5th & 6th graders are learning how to write Evidence-Based paragraphs. Today, they looked at a sample paragraph to identify the parts of an EB paragraph.
7th & 8th graders are preparing to read “The Monsters are Due on Maple Street” with Anticipation Stations to learn more about teleplays, The Twilight Zone, vocabulary words, opinion statements, and making predictions.
3rd and 4th grade worked together to test how friction effects an objects motion. They tested various items in the classroom to determine which items went down the ramp first and why.
First graders started subtraction within 20 today. We discovered different strategies to solve equations. Some students chose to work independently to test their skills. 🙂
STEM Survival Camp - Students in grades 5-8 STEM class are creating a model shelter that will withstand rain & wind if sent off in the woods with only limited supplies.
5th and 6th are completing a variety of stations over what they have been learning about the layers of the Earth in science.
It was exciting to be able to have the annual Grandparents' Day celebration again at Shawnee. Over 65 special guests were able to join in on the classroom fun and the delicious lunch.
The fifth and sixth grade students are currently learning about Earth’s layers and Earth’s different systems. They were able to complete a lab which had them investigating how a hard boiled egg’s layers were similar to the Earth’s layers. They were able to make some great observations and comparisons about both.
The 7th and 8th grade students worked on a lab experiment using eggs to learn about osmosis during their science class. The students worked together to measure out materials and record beginning and ending changes as well as make observations.
5th & 6th graders enjoyed a book tasting during ELA today. They sampled books from 5 different genres to expand their appreciation for reading.
7th & 8th grade students began the year by building a community culture in our classroom. They worked together to create norms for a physically safe, emotionally safe, respectful, and productive classroom.
The 5th & 6th grade students first week back to school completed two different STEM activities. They learned to work together to solve problems to build a spaghetti tower to support a marshmallow. They also built towers with cups only using string and and a rubber band.

Reminder: Monday evening, Aug. 22nd is supply drop off from 5:00 to 6:00 pm. Students may drop off their supplies and meet their classroom teachers.
Shawnee R-III hosted an Honor Roll Recognition for students achieving honor roll all 4 quarters. A total of 17 students and their parents enjoyed the special breakfast.
Student Council members enjoyed a service project field trip on Thursday, May 12th. After lunch at Pizza Glen, we traveled to Walmart where the girls had $500–all funds collected from fundraisers—to purchase personal hygiene products. Those items were then taken to the Community of Christ Church in Clinton to be used in their Blessings Boxes. I’m so proud of these girls, their hard work, and their desire to help others!
2nd graders rotated in centers to scan codes with iPads to learn more about jellyfish.
